Mumps is sometimes misdiagnosed as Glandular Fever

It has been reported that some patients have been misdiagnosed with Glandular Fever , when in fact the correct diagnosis in their specific case was Mumps.

There is no specific treatment for mumps. The condition is viral so antibiotics will not help in treatment. The diagnosis is through a physical examination where the doctor can check swelling in the face. The recent contact with an infected person is also a strong indication as the virus is highly contagious. A swab test from the throat as well as urine and blood tests are sometimes ordered.

Always consult your doctor or health professional, and do not self diagnose.

Symptoms can include:

Loss of appetite, painful chewing or swallowing, fever, facial swelling, headache, fatigue, aches and pains

Symptoms are a guideline only and may apply to either the diagnosis or the reported misdiagnosis, or both. Consult your specialist for further information.
