Lichen Planus is sometimes misdiagnosed as Verrucous Lupus Erythematosus

It has been reported that some patients have been misdiagnosed with Verrucous Lupus Erythematosus, when in fact the correct diagnosis in their specific case was Lichen Planus.

Lichen planus is a condition that causes swelling and irritation in the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes such as the skin in the mouth. It can cause purplish, itchy flat bumps on the skin and in other areas it forms lacy white patches. Other symptoms include hair loss, change in scalp colour and nail damage or loss. This condition occurs when the patient’s immune system attacks cells of the skin or mucous membranes.

Always consult your doctor or health professional, and do not self diagnose.

Symptoms can include:

Purplish flat bumps most on wrist or ankle, purplish flat bumps on inner forearm, lacy white patches in and around the mouth, painful sores in the mouth or vagina, itching, blisters that break to form scabs or crusts, hair loss, change in scalp colour, nail damage or loss

Symptoms are a guideline only and may apply to either the diagnosis or the reported misdiagnosis, or both. Consult your specialist for further information.
